The Art of Murder
February 1st 2007 13:41
The family of 21-year-old Stephanie Gach, who was abducted and murdered in 1992, thought they had stopped her killer from continuing to hurt the family when they filed a lawsuit in 2004 over essays about the crime that convicted murderer Jack Trawick had posted on the Internet.
But Trawick, on death row at Holman Prison in Atmore, is back on the Internet -- this time offering for sale sketches of the mutilated corpse of a young woman on an Internet auction site.
"Just the thought of it makes me sick," victims' rights advocate Carol Melon told The Birmingham News. She was speaking on behalf of Stephanie Gach's mother, Mary Kate Gach, who was too upset to comment.
Attorney General Troy King said Tuesday his investigators are looking for ways to force Web Site operators to remove sketches by Trawick.
King said he believes the Internet postings may be a violation of a state law that prohibits convicted criminals from profiting from their crimes.
"We expect to send a letter to operators demanding they stop providing a forum for this art work," said King, who called the postings "atrocious."
Stephanie Gach was abducted Oct. 9, 1992, from the parking lot of her apartment complex after being followed by Trawick from a Birmingham shopping mall. Gach was strangled, stabbed through the heart and her body was thrown from an embankment. Trawick was also convicted of killing Aileen Pruitt, 27, about four months before Gach's murder,
Mary Kate Gach filed a lawsuit in Montgomery in 2004 seeking to force the Alabama Department of Corrections to stop Trawick from sending material to the Web sites. Her attorney, George Jones of Selma, said Tuesday that lawsuit is still pending, but that the postings appeared to stop after the suit was filed.
"We may have to file something new," Jones said.
Brian Corbett, a spokesman for the Alabama Department of Corrections, said prison officials are powerless to stop inmates from having their paintings and sketches sold on the Web sites.
"They're horrific," Corbett said of the images. "We don't condone them. But the DOC does not control the Internet."

This is going to sound really bad ... (as in ... um ... where do I start? ...
Okay. For starters? I read true-crime novels all the time ... For some reason, the depravity of human nature is as much of a fascination to me as is its beauty ...
I'm a creative writer by profession. So, if I want to write about a serial killer? I have to get into his/her mind ... (I'm a method writer ... but only in the imagination ... (I don't go out and kill people in order to write about killers ... I just read everything written about them by writers who probe into their brains etc ... (or books written by the killers themselves ... and I absorb it ... soak it in ... To me? Human nature? It's as depraved as it is beautiful ... My mind? ... I might have made a good actor if I hadn't chosen to be a writer ... because to me? Getting into other people's minds is easy ... It's just a simple process of letting go of everything that I am ... (this is why it's difficult to write this .. because it might sound like I'm a bit up myself ... but I think I was given a few gifts in life that other people didn't receive ...
So, anyway ... now that I've blown someone else's trumpet ... (because to me? I didn't give myself those gifts ... I just woke up one day and had them ... (and now ...? In virtual land? I realise others weren't given them ... what the fuck can I do about that? It's not my fault ... Yeah I get a bit disappointed with people in the main ... they seem to think that what I possess should belong to them ... and they either want to possess me completely or somehow cut me down to size ... (when in reality? I'm too big? ... That's my arrogant humility speaking there ...
So the reason I've raved on so much on your blog ... I really didn't want to tell you that I drew that picture in about 30 seconds .... (because I know the mind of a serial killer without ever having been one ...
And when I saw your comment ... ? I thought ... fuck ... what do I write in response to that? ...
Anyway ... I've written it now .... and I no longer edit my writing much ... or my thoughts ... (the reason I like you blog so much? ... I love wicked, dark, delicious stuff ...
And sorry if by posting that pic I made you think it was the real serial killer ... cos I had no intention whatsoever of making you think that ... and now I feel a bit embarrassed that you thought that ...
So I'll go ...
But I'll return okay? Cos I like your blog ... (that's the sort of effect a post like this will have on me ...
It just gets my creative juices flowing ... (normally when i do a drawing in MS Paint? Never 30 seconds ... usually it's about 2-5 mins ... but I just thought ... serial killers ... ? they are so fucking warped in the head ... they draw shit that sells for millions .. and yet intrinsically there's no artistic value in it ... it's like a kiddy's drawing ... because that's where they're at in their regressed minds .. they've never left childhood trauma behind ... (they're not monsters ... they're just kids who've had their creativity and everything beautiful bashed out of them in their childhood ... and so in order to obtain love ... (as Brian Masters wrote? ...
They kill for company ...
And me? A kid. So it's easy for me to draw like a serial killer ... (I just can't kill anyone ... that's about the only difference between me and a serial killer ... (other than that? We're both human beings who have been fucked over big time ... (Me? I write ... Serial killers? They kill ... and we both get the same thrill ... and it's such a shame ... because they were some mother's child once upon a time ... and I find that sad ... So I'll go now ... cos this stuff ? ... It's so misunderstood by mainstream people who go and clap and cheer when someone is executed ... Dead Man Walking ... ? Well I'm a Dead Man Writing then ...

..anotehr interesting post...
I'm left wondering if anyone acutally 'bid' and bought his drawings?
Gee, "Profiting from their hideous crimes..." what a notion?
I personally know the mother of a raped and murdered young girl here in Australia - and I know she doesn't rest a minute in her efforts to endorse these laws, and stop this type of nonsense...
Great Post!
