Japan and Suicide
March 16th 2007 04:29
One of the things associated with Japan is suicide. It's not always talked about but in mainstream media but the number of suicide-related deaths and injuries in Japan are so high. Outsiders like us may not fully understand them but the suicide culture in Japan is just deeply ingrained. For them, taking one's own life is honorable and, in a way, romantic. They would rather choose death than live a life in shame.
Transpacific Radio has a great post about Japan and suicide. It's worth a read as well as the links within piece. Here is an interesting excerpt.
I'm really curious about the recent trend on suicide pacts made over the internet. I saw the Japanese film "Suicide Circle" (aka Suicide Club) and I thought it was just made up. Turns out it's based on actual incidents. See this article.
I would like to hear your views on the suicide culture. Although there are countries which have higher suicide rates, for me the one in Japan is more striking.

Trains in Tokyo are often delayed by “human body accidents” and macabre humor has led to the coinage of terms such as “Chuo-cide” to describe stepping in front of a train on the busy commuter artery.
Passengers on the Tokyo Metro or Seibu Railway have surely noticed the mirrors on railway platforms. No, they’re not there to cater to the vanity of passengers - they’re there in the hope that being able to look at one’s own face will change the minds of those who would cause a “human body accident.”

It also makes me wonder what rates... I mean, there's not a handbook, I'm sure, that says, "Well, if you do this or this, that's called a mistake. But if you do this or that, you must kill yourself."

It seems Japan is such a driven country with lofty goals that many feel they are incapable of facing the challenge.
Problem is we are all born with different gifts and to measure yourslf against a cultural standard rather than what you love doing will always mean disappointment.

It worries me that the image of Japan as having a culture of suicide persists, especially when objective evidence rather strongly suggests otherwise.

I don't have any specific reason why I'm more interested with Japan's suicide culture. Japan in general really interests me and this darker side as well.
